Merge VCF contacts cleanly when you switch phones

8 min read

Moving from iPhone to Android (or back) often means messy contact exports. Here’s how to merge VCF files and reduce duplicates before import.

Why phone switches create contact chaos

Exports from Google, iCloud, WhatsApp, and old SIM backups rarely match. You end up with duplicate names, half-filled cards, and numbers stored under three different labels.

Importing every export blindly multiplies the mess. A merge-and-review step before the new phone import saves hours of cleanup later.

Export, then work on copies

Export a fresh VCF from each account you trust. Keep those files as backups. Do your merge on copies so you can restart if something looks wrong.

If one export is clearly outdated, leave it out. Bad data merged carefully is still bad data.

Merge locally, then spot-check

ToolPriv’s Merge VCF Contacts tool reads files in your browser, combines them, and helps you see unique counts before you download the cleaned export. Contacts are personal — local processing is the point.

Open the result on a computer if you can and scan for obvious duplicates or empty names before importing into the new phone.

Import once, verify twice

Import into one primary account (usually Google or iCloud), let it sync, then check favorites, ICE contacts, and a few key business numbers.

Only after that should you delete old duplicates on the previous phone. Never wipe the old device until the new one can call the people who matter.
